You have a hypothesis. Now what?

The moment after formulating a hypothesis is one of the most uncertain in any research project. You have a question you believe is worth answering. You may even have a general idea of how to approach it. But the distance between "I think X is true" and "here is a phased, resourced, timeline-bound plan to test X" is where many promising ideas stall.

Some stall because the researcher is not sure what the first concrete step should be. Some stall because the scope is unclear -- should this be a six-month pilot or a three-year program? Some stall because there are dependencies that are not obvious until you try to plan the work: you need a biomarker assay validated before you can design the trial, and you need preliminary data before you can apply for the grant that funds the assay validation.

Planning is not a separate activity from research. It is research. And it benefits from the same evidence-based approach that drives every other stage.

Phased planning from evidence

One of the most valuable and most neglected elements of research planning is defining criteria for stopping. At what point does negative evidence mean you should change direction rather than persist? Without explicit go/no-go criteria, the natural tendency is to continue investing in a direction long after the evidence suggests it is not working.

Papers linked to phases

Each phase of the roadmap is linked to the specific papers from your evidence base that inform it. The preliminary work phase links to papers that demonstrate what preparatory data is needed. The main study phase links to papers that justify the methodology. The analysis phase links to papers that used comparable statistical approaches.

This linkage serves two purposes. First, it makes the rationale for each phase traceable and defensible. When a collaborator asks why phase two requires a specific assay validation step, the answer is not "because I think we need it" but "because these four papers show that this assay needs validation in our specific context before it can be used as a primary outcome measure."

Second, it creates a living connection between your plan and your evidence. If new papers are added to your evidence base that affect the rationale for a specific phase, that connection is visible.

From roadmap to grant application

A well-structured research roadmap is, in essence, the work plan section of a grant application. When your roadmap has phased milestones, defined timelines, go/no-go criteria, and evidence-linked rationale, translating it into a grant proposal is a matter of formatting, not reconstruction.

This is one of the practical advantages of working in a connected system. The hypothesis generates the roadmap. The roadmap informs the protocol. The protocol and roadmap together form the core of the grant application. Each stage builds on the last, and the evidence follows throughout.

Planning as a research output

We think research roadmaps deserve more respect as intellectual products. A well-designed plan, with evidence-based milestones and explicit decision criteria, reflects deep understanding of a field. It demonstrates that the researcher knows not only what to test but how to test it, when to decide, and what success and failure look like.

A hypothesis is the beginning. A roadmap is what turns it into science.
