From a Small Town on the Mediterranean to Medical Research AI

NousLab was not born in a tech hub. It was born in Cambrils, a small coastal town in southern Catalonia, fuelled by the kind of stubbornness that only comes when you believe the problem is worth solving.

This week, Diari de Tarragona published a feature on NousLab and the story behind it. It felt like a good moment to share why we built this platform, what drives us, and where we are heading.

The problem we could not ignore

Medical researchers are drowning in literature. There are over 250 million scientific articles across major academic databases. The volume grows every day. And yet, the way most teams work with that evidence has barely changed in decades.

They read papers one by one. They copy data into spreadsheets. They write narrative summaries that areimpossible to compare across studies. A single systematic review can take months of manual work before the actual research even begins.

We kept asking ourselves: why are some of the brightest minds in science spending their time on data entry?

A personal starting point

The motivation was never purely commercial. It started with something personal. Watching family members go through cancer treatment changes the way you think about medical research. You stop seeing it as an abstract process and start seeing it as time. Time that patients do not have. Time that researchers lose on tasks a machine could handle.

That tension between urgency and inefficiency is what got NousLab started. Not a business plan. Not amarket analysis. A feeling that something had to change.

What we actually built

NousLab connects to twelve international academic databases, including PubMed, Semantic Scholar, arXiv,OpenAlex, and CrossRef. It does not just search. It extracts structured data from papers, detects connections between studies, generates hypotheses, builds protocols, and maps out research roadmaps.

The goal was never to replace the researcher. It was to remove everything that stands between a researcher and the work that actually matters: thinking, questioning, discovering.

Every piece of data the platform surfaces is traceable back to its source. No black boxes. No hallucinated references. If the platform tells you something, you can verify it.

Privacy is not a feature. It is a requirement.

We work with sensitive research data. That means GDPR compliance is not optional. We built the platform with security at its core, and we offer private server installations for teams that need full control over their data.

This was a deliberate choice. In medical research, trust is everything. If a platform cannot guarantee data privacy, it has no place in the workflow.

Where we are now

We are in early commercial stage. We have just participated in the Health Revolution Congress 2026 in Barcelona, where the response exceeded our expectations. We are now scheduling demos with research teams, hospitals, and laboratories across Europe.

We are not chasing hypergrowth. We would rather grow steadily, making sure every team that uses NousLab gets the highest level of service and support.

Why this matters

Every hour a researcher spends on bureaucratic tasks is an hour not spent on discovery. Every systematic review that takes six months instead of six weeks is a delay that has real consequences for patients waiting for better treatments.

We built NousLab because we believe researchers deserve better tools. Not flashier ones. Better ones. Tools that respect their expertise, protect their data, and give them back the time to do what they trained for.

This is just the beginning.
