In most research teams, work is invisible until it is published. A shared research library makes ongoing work findable and reusable.
In a research department of 30 people, it is almost guaranteed that at some point, two people are working on overlapping questions without knowing it. Not because they are careless. Because there is no system that makes ongoing research work visible to colleagues.
Published papers are findable. Grant applications are sometimes shared internally. But the working material of research -- the literature reviews in progress, the hypotheses under consideration, the preliminary analyses, the abandoned directions -- lives on individual laptops, in personal folders, in email threads that the rest of the team never sees.
This invisibility is expensive. When a postdoc spends two weeks reviewing literature on a topic that a colleague already reviewed last month, that is two weeks of duplicated effort. When a PI develops a hypothesis without knowing that another group in the same institution explored and abandoned the same direction for reasons documented nowhere, that is wasted time and potentially wasted funding.
Making research work findable

A postdoc generated a hypothesis that is close to what you are pursuing but focused on a different population. You fork it, adjust the population parameters, and explore your variation. The foundational evidence carries over. You add what is specific to your direction.
Knowledge that accumulates
In most research organizations, knowledge accumulates in people's heads. When someone leaves, their knowledge leaves with them. The literature reviews they did, the dead ends they explored, the insights they had but never published -- all gone.
When research work lives in a shared library, organizational knowledge accumulates independently of individual tenure. A postdoc who joins the team can search the library to understand what has been tried, what has been found, and what has been abandoned. They start from the organization's collective understanding, not from zero.
This is particularly valuable in areas where negative results and abandoned directions are informative. Knowing that a colleague explored a hypothesis and found insufficient evidence is as valuable as knowing that a hypothesis was confirmed. But negative results are rarely published and almost never communicated internally in any systematic way.
Collaboration without coordination overhead
The traditional alternative to a shared library is coordination meetings. Teams meet regularly to share updates on what they are working on. This works for small teams but scales poorly. As team size grows, the meetings either become too long or too superficial. Important overlaps are missed because they do not seem relevant until someone is deep in the work.
A shared research library provides passive coordination. You do not need to attend a meeting to know what your colleagues are working on. You search the library when you start a new direction, and you find what is relevant. The coordination happens through the structure, not through communication overhead.
Research is a collective endeavor. Individual researchers build on each other's work. But within organizations, this building process is surprisingly inefficient because the building materials -- ongoing work, preliminary findings, explored directions -- are invisible. Making them visible is not a technology problem. It is an organizational design choice. The technology just needs to support it.
